"Elgar Lodge Duo Romp First Prize in the Weatheroak Bowl Pairs"
The Worcestershire Masonic GOLFING Society (WMGS) completed a busy schedule in 2019 at Cirencester Golf Club with the 3 Way match(s) vs Gloucestershire & Oxfordshire.
Although the day was sunny and warm, a brisk wind had to be endured for the 42 players (20 from WMGS).With excellent scores being returned from all three Provinces, Bro. Emerson Holder, Lechmere Volunteer Lodge No 1874 led the field with a score of 43 pts (H/Cap 27) strongly supported by Bro. David Hughes, Francis Davies Lodge No. 5035, with a score of 37 pts (H/Cap 26).
With several WMGS players returning scores in the 30’s, WMGS retained both the ‘Merson Culy’ and ‘Saucy’ Cups vs Gloucestershire by 470 – 372 pts and Oxfordshire by 219 – 182 pts respectively.
These results completed a clean sweep for WMGS in 2019, having previously beaten Staffordshire MGS 364 – 348 pts and Warwickshire MGA 388 – 345 pts at The Vale Golf Club in Evesham in June, and winning against Shropshire MGS 412 – 355 pts and Herefordshire MGS 412 – 405 pts at Bromsgrove Golf Club in August.
In between the Provincial matches, WMGS held their 56th Annual Event at Kings Norton Golf Club in July with the usual very keen competition for the main events. In ideal weather conditions and the course in excellent condition W.Bros. Geoff Hudspith (H/Cap 17) and Graham Heath (H/Cap 24) representing Elgar Lodge No. 9254 won the Weatheroak Bowl pairs competition with a score of 72pts.
The individual winner of the Fellows Cup was W.Bro. Chris Firminger, Round Table Lodge No 7961 with a score of 41 pts (H/Cap 17). The Veterans Cup (over 70 yrs) was won by W.Bro. Peter Cartwright, Old Edwardian Lodge No. 6141, with a record score of 39 pts.
The Provincial Golfing Society has grown into a strong happy and successful group of Freemasons with members handicaps ranging from 8 to 28. All members of the WMGS declare their CONGU certified handicaps and all competitions are played with a maximum handicap of 28.
Holding four events a year, June to September and visiting excellent golf courses, it is ideal for those golfers in the Province who are looking for some variation in their golfing calendar and friendly companionship on the social side of their masonic journey.
